Why does the word Selah appear so often in the Psalms and what does it mean?

The word Selah occurs 74 times in the Bible and always in the Psalms. To be quite honest Bible experts aren’t completely certain what the word means. Since most of the Psalms were set to music many believe it is a musical term, perhaps instructing the musicians in some way. Another popular idea is that selah is a word encouraging the reader to stop and meditate on the truths just revealed.
